When Janice was in high school, she had achieved a reputation as a person who studied much of the time and who rarely, if ever, drank with her friends. She seemed passionate about doing well academically so that she would be able to secure a career that she not only liked but one that also gave her a degree of monetary stability.

After much thought, in time she made up her mind that she wanted to be a trial lawyer. In order to reach this goal, nonetheless, she would first have to attend four years of undergrad education.

After Janice completed high school, she applied to and was accepted into a distinguished program in linguistics. Her rationale for this decision was that this academic discipline would be a good springboard for law school and wouldn’t be comparable to the preponderance of law school applicants who choose political science as their undergraduate major or minor.

After graduating with a 4.0 GPA at the undergraduate level, she applied to and was accepted at a nationally ranked law school at one of the Ivy League universities.

She liked her legal studies but every so often she was beleaguered about all the work that law school entailed. Akin to the way in which she handled herself in her high school and undergraduate days, however, she made pals easily but almost never participated in social events until the semester was over.

Janice was the kind of person who worked diligently to reach her goal and then would take a breather when she could. It just so happens, nevertheless, that a large number of the things she did between school sessions or during summer breaks did not involve drinking. Needless to say, Janice was anything but a party-person. Now that her finals for her second year in law school were over and elated with the fact that she had done very well on her exams, nonetheless, she wanted to take a break and do some celebrating.

So Janice and a few of her friends from the university went to a local bar where they had a few mixed drinks. As the hours quickly passed, Janice persisted in drinking without having a care in the world about term papers or examinations the next day. In point of fact, Janice revealed to her classmates how much fun it was to have fun drinking with her law school pals.

As the evening moved forward, Janice and her pals continued to drink. In truth, she was having such a marvelous time that she didn’t want the night to come to an end. It was almost as if she was making up for lost time and making an effort to condense a year’s worth of merriment into a single evening. Such a “game plan,” in most cases, does not work. As a matter of fact, when Janice went to the powder room and threw up, her pals started to feel apprehensive about her safety.

Around twenty-five minutes later when Janice started to speak in a confused manner, slur her words, and then become unconscious, nonetheless, her pals immediately knew that they needed to call 911, the emergency number, and ask for medical assistance because they believed that Janice was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Once Janice was in the rehab hospital, the presiding doctor verified what her classmates had speculated, to be exact, that Janice ingested substantially more alcohol than her body could process and, as a consequence, she suffered from an alcohol overdose.

After the medical team pumped her stomach until no gastric contents were detectable, Janice was wheeled to the recovery room. After staying approximately three hours in recovery, Janice was then transferred to one of the regular hospital rooms. Fortunately, the most dangerous part of her hospitalization was over and all of her vital signs were once again in the normal range.

In response to Janice’s medical condition, her buddies thoughtfully telephoned her Mom and Dad. Consequently, early the next day, her parents and her best friends went to the hospital to visit Janice.

Janice Comes Close to Losing Her Life, is Happy to be Alive, and Promises to Never Again Drink in an Abusive and Excessive Manner

Janice was very aware that she came an inch from losing her life and, as a result, was thankful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat depressed knowing that she had almost passed away the previous night. Her Mother and Father knew how rigorously she studied in graduate school and how little she let herself socialize with her pals. Nonetheless, they also realized that Janice needed to stay away from hazardous drinking.

Consequently, they recommended that in the future, whenever a drinking occasion develops, that she always drink in moderation and responsibly. Janice was of the same opinion and gave her word to her parents and to her friends that she would never again drink in an abusive and excessive manner. As stated by Janice, “I never thought that I would become one of the alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics in the local town newspaper. I now know that hazardous drinking is not for me. I assure everyone that this will never happen again.”

Fortunately, Janice was not only “school smart” but she also displayed a lot of common sense. Stated more explicitly, she rapidly comprehended that she had made an error and decided that she would never make the same mistake again. In actual fact, she now grasped the fact that she had involved herself in “binge drinking” and that even one instance of this form of excessive drinking can end in death.
