Attitude…Accomplishment…Yadah, Yadah, Yadah
Most of us have positions that require dealing with people. And do you realize what’s scary about dealing with people? The sort of service the customer receives is dependent on the mood we’re in that day.
Allow me to hit you with an illustration: give me a call on a day when my hair-do plays nice and I don’t need to pop the clutch to get my car going, and I’m all “Thanks for calling Violet’s Vinyl Roofing! Let us return your vehicle top to its original bumpy goodness!” Sickening, I know. On the flip side, give me a call on a morning when my precious six year old lets loose with a melt down insisting on wearing his pj’s and cowboy boots to school and you likely will get “Vinyl roofing is for AUTO ROOFS!!! What type of *&^%$ idiot wants to put it on their home?!!!”
Call me on Friday after lunchtime: “Harriet’s House of Hair. Of course! I am able to squeeze you in this afternoon. Come on down darling and we will fix you right up.” But call me Monday morning before I’ve had my caffeine: “Harriet’s House of Hair. You’re getting married so you need to have your hair styled? Is that not just peachy. I wouldn’t shell out too much. You realize it won’t last. He’s most likely already sleeping with somebody else. How about Wednesday at three?”
Lucky that I’m not employed in the emergency room. At the start of my work day, I’ll work heroically (just like a television ER doctor) to bring back the dismembered Teddy Bear brought in with the youngster afflicted with a splinter. But come to me right at the end of my shift when I’m heading out for a week at the lake and I’m sorry, but I’ll be compelled to pull the plug. He’s 50. He’s lived long enough.
Our emotional state affects whether we see our work place as fun, or simply hell with fluorescent lighting. Our emotional state affects how we handle our clients, which in turn affects our success. Of course, that’s regular motivational speaker fodder, but it is still true. Nevertheless so most people wait for external factors to determine our emotional wellbeing. I’m not blowing it out of proportion when I suggest that most individuals sit on their hands hoping that a white knight will come and wipe away their troubles, and that eventuality determines if they are happy or not. Daily life will invariably have it’s difficult times and individuals who are challenging to cope with. Do not let your lifetime pass you by while you wait on outside conditions to make you contented. It’s your choice to control your disposition. End of story. It’s up to you to decide whether you consider your job fun, or the third ring of hell. Your accomplishment relies on it.
