Although our society has made many advances in gender differences, boys are still brought up thinking that they need to be strong, hide their emotions, and a variety of other behaviors that are considered appropriate for boys.  Little do we know that these limiting beliefs might be unfavorable in building self confidence in boys.

When boys feel they are not allowed or have no channels to express themselves, they can lose confidence in themselves and develop a low self esteem.

 

If you are a parent, what can you do to build a positive self confidence in young boys?  Here are a few advices:

1. Let them know that you are available

If boys know they have someone to talk to who will not judge them for expressing their feelings and fears, they will be more likely to take advantage of this.Be sure that you provide a safe environment and different ways for boys to tell you how they feel.

2. Show them that it is okay to express emotions

Let them know that showing a healthy amount of emotions is a positive thing.It also leads them to better know themselves.The more they can handle their emotions properly, the more confident they feel.  This does not mean that they need to be overly sensitive, but displaying emotions is definitely necessary for both adults and boys. In fatct, expressing emotions is helpful in developing a positive sense of self worth.

3. Help them find what they are good at

Tell them that not all boys are going to be great at sports or other traditionally “male” activities, and that this is okay. Encourage boys to try a variety of activities and interests to see which ones fit and which do not. If a boy loves singing, for instance, do not chastise him for this.  If he is made to feel unworthy for pursuing interests, he can translate this into feeling of low self esteem.

As boys find healthy channels to express themselves, follow their interests, and have a strong support system, they will be much better able to build a strong sense of self confidence.

If you start building a solid foundations for self confidence in boys, it becomes easier to make it through the teenage years and even through adulthood.You can see that it is crucial to start at an early stage to help young boys build self confidence.They will profit from this throughout his lifetime.
