What is the best singing method?

The best singing method is one that works best for you. Many teachers will claim that their method is the best. As long as the method introduces you to breath and breathing management, tone and resonance, articulation that allows you to be understood without causing tension, and the general principles of good singing, then it’s a good method.

Why doesn’t my voice work sometimes?

Plenty of things can cause your voice not to work right. Thinking too much about how you sound as you sing can make you nervous and you may not sound your best. Your voice will not respond well if you are tired; make sure you get enough sleep. Singing too much the day before or the day of an audition can cause your voice to get tired. Singing muscles are just like any other muscle. The muscles need to be worked out, but they also need their rest. Any emotions you have might impact your voice. Crying may have a negative result on your vocal cords.

Do fat people have bigger voices?

No. The size of your voice is in no way related to the size of your waist. If it were the case, then all large people would have a great voice. Actually, having extra weight around the middle makes it harder to move your body and to breathe. If you have been used to moving under a lot of weight, then it shouldn’t really be an issue. The size of your throat and head make a bigger difference in your voice than your belly.

My voice is really scratchy, do I have nodes?

It takes quite a bit of abuse to get nodes. You can’t get nodes from yelling for your favorite team for one day. Naturally they would swell, but it would take much more abuse to give them nodes. Nodes are basically like calluses. Unless there is excessive abuse, you won’t have nodes. Sing in the high range if you are concerned. Nodes will for the most part only affect the high part of your voice. If you find that the middle area of the voice is all that’s affected rather than the other parts, then you may other problems.

What’s the difference between a singing coach, voice teacher, and an accompanist?

The coach is a person that can play the piano and will give you good advice on singing. There will be a number of things that take place during a session with a coach, some of which involve pronunciation, and singing in the right style. A coach is able to teach you the basics, and of course compliment the things that your voice teacher will tell you.

A pianist or accompanist is someone who plays the piano for you to practice singing but doesn’t offer advice. An accompanist is not cheaper than a coach though.

The voice teacher is the technique specialist. The coach might know the technique, but your voice teacher is the expert. The voice teacher may not play the piano so well but should make up for it with in knowledge and advice on your singing technique. For any voice session, you will probably spend half of it on technique, and half on repertoire.
