All business owners must struggle with time management. As a personal trainer with a business, you also have to plan around the busy days of your clients. While each of us usually has a plan of attack for our daily lives, few of us actually know how to leverage our time.

Lists are often the way people work. Sometimes that’s the only way people know how. The list says there is a scheduled meeting in the early morning, and then clients back to back until lunch, and then activities in the afternoon, all in the time schedule until that hour when you’re done and get to go home. Back at the homestead there are other lists waiting.

Yep, that’s what we call a tight schedule. Yet it does not prove to be an efficient way to manage your time.

Leveraging means balancing. Keeping a good balance of your own time is key.

If you want more balance in your life you’ll need to pause and figure out where you stand. It’s important to evaluate your current situation before you can do anything about it.

Journal your time for several days, preferably a whole week. After the time period, determine the amount of time spent with your family.

  • Did you spend time doing a hobby or something else you really enjoyed?

  • What kind of books or magazines did you read?

  • How much exercise were you able to do?

  • Within that particular time, did you have a good read?

  • If yes, were you in it for work or just for the fun of it?

  • Did you spend time in any personal goals or endeavors, and if so, how much?

If you are a traditional follower of a “to do” list, you will probably find several areas lacking when evaluating your trial period. Figure out how much time you spent on what. How much time did you spend for business, family, personal health, reading and other interests? Get the percentages. How much time did you allot for career compared to family and other important aspects? This might be a real eye opener!

The great part about this exercise is that once you see how little time you spend on personal development, you can devise a plan to change it. Allocate how much time per day you want to set aside for family, how many hours per week you need to devote to your personal goals, time for your hobbies, camping, exercise, wakeboarding, etc.

When you leverage your time and deliberately choose how to spend it, you’re no longer a slave to the lists! The “to do” list is an important way to track chores, but life should be more than a chore.
